Matzah Monsters
There are authentic Passover recipes, and then there’s…whatever this is. But before you write it off as a kid project, know that these are genuinely so fun for everyone (though they do work as a great kids’ table decoration). And they’re easy: just matzah dipped in pastel-colored white chocolate (or candy melts), designed to look like friendly little monsters. You can customize the colors however you want, too. For the eyes, I keep it simple with a fork dipped in melted chocolate. Toothpicks work too, and piping bags are allowed, but let’s all calm down a little because…these are still…matzah monsters.
Historically accurate Passover fare? No. But so fun. The simple tutorial is below.
Matzah Monsters
Makes about 12-16
3–4 standard sheets matzah
Parchment-lined baking sheet
A few small microwave-safe bowls
3 cups candy melts, assorted colors (about 1 cup per color)
Coconut oil, optional (for a smoother finish)
½ cup white chocolate chips
Handful semisweet chocolate chips
Toothpick or very small paintbrush
Break the matzah into irregular shards—you want an uneven, asymmetrical mix. Arrange on the prepared baking sheet.
Place 1 cup of candy melts (one color) in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 20-second intervals, stirring between each, until fully melted (about 1 minute total). If desired, stir in about ½ teaspoon coconut oil for a smoother finish.
Spoon the melted candy over about one-third of the matzah pieces, leaving a small section uncovered so it’s clear there’s matzah underneath. Transfer to the baking sheet and immediately press white chocolate chips (pointed side down) into the melted coating to form eyes. Use as many eyes as you like.
Repeat with the remaining candy colors and matzah pieces. Let set at room temperature for at least 30 minutes.
Melt the semisweet chocolate chips in the microwave until smooth. Using the prongs of a fork, a toothpick, or a small paintbrush, dot little “pupils” onto each white chocolate eye.
Let set for another 30 minutes. Once firm, gently peel the monsters from the parchment and serve.
