An Easy Latke Board

This latke board is one of my favorite ways to serve latkes, whether it’s for a sit-down Hanukkah dinner, a party with kids, or something a little more cocktail-y. It takes a familiar comfort food and makes it feel intentional, while still letting everyone choose their own toppings—which, as we know, can be deeply personal. A few tips:

Start with a flat board or platter. A cutting board, cheese board, or slate tray works best here; anything with curved edges makes it harder to keep things neat and evenly spaced. Transfer your toppings into small bowls—applesauce, sour cream, chives, smoked salmon, or whatever you love—and arrange them across the board before adding the latkes. It instantly makes the whole thing feel more considered.

When it comes to arranging, aim for fullness. You don’t want big gaps or empty corners; a board that looks abundant feels generous, even if the quantities are reasonable. Small details help here to fill in blank spaces—fresh herbs, a few edible flowers, or little Hanukkah touches like dreidels or gelt tucked into the corners.

Add the latkes last, ideally hot. The eternal board challenge! You don’t want to build a board around something that’s already cold. Get everything else arranged and ready to go, then slide the latkes on at the very end.
