DIY Hanukkah Sprinkles

Yes, homemade sprinkles exist! And they’re absolutely worth trying. I made these for Hanukkah, but they’re so easy to customize no matter the occasion, and genuinely fun to work with. They’re larger than store-bought sprinkles, softer in texture, and can be tinted to match whatever you’re making, whether that’s a holiday dessert or a party theme. Very forgiving, too: If something goes a little sideways during the making-of, you trim it or toss it, and move on. Tutorial ahead!

DIY Sprinkles

1½ cups (288g) confectioners’ sugar

1 tablespoon (20g) light corn syrup

½ teaspoon (2g) vanilla extract

Neon food coloring (or standard food coloring)

2 tablespoons (30g) water

Mix the confectioners’ sugar, corn syrup, vanilla, and water in a medium bowl until smooth and thick. The mixture should pipe cleanly without spreading; if needed, add more water a few drops at a time.

Divide the mixture among small bowls and tint with food coloring, adding color gradually.

Transfer each color to a piping bag or zip-top bag and snip a very small opening at the tip. Pipe thin, continuous lines onto parchment-lined baking sheets, spacing them slightly apart.

Let stand uncovered at room temperature until completely dry and firm, at least 8 hours or overnight. Break into irregular pieces.

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 month. Use to decorate cakes, cookies, or other desserts.
